Resurgent Breezes - James Brown

Resurgent Breezes is a mix of everything that’s shaped me; growing up on ’60s and ’70s music, living through the eras, and just making what feels right. I didn’t want to stick to one genre because honestly, I love it all; R&B, jazz, gospel, rock, pop, even a little country and classical. It’s all here, or on the way.

I worked with my cousin Donny R. McCullough, who produced the album and brought in some amazing talent. One of them was the late Darrell Crooks, an incredible guitarist who played with top names and on big shows, rest in peace, D. And Elaine Stepter, who used to sing lead for Rolls Royce (“Car Wash”), added her magic too.

Some songs have lyrics, some don’t (yet), but they’re all part of a bigger story. Just giving folks a peek into what I’ve done, and what’s still coming.

Tracklist

1. Reminisce
This one came from a random snippet I heard on a commercial that reminded me of a ’70s sitcom, though I couldn’t recall the exact show. That tiny memory evolved into this piece, and Rodney Taylor brought it home with his soulful saxophone work.

2. No Edges
During this continuous journey of learning music production, I started this track with the idea of smooth chord transitions ; ones that fade and flow into each other. Over time, it naturally took shape with some bold leads and defined sections.

3. Streads N Things
I stumbled on a drum mix that had this metallic edge to it. That vibe pushed me toward a new chord progression and some guitar plucking. It led to a collab with the legendary Darrell Crooks (RIP), who added his signature touch, alongside other amazing musicians.

4. Bobbin In Da Breeze
The name came first ; something I made up without formal music training. I called the structure “transitional chords” (not sure if that’s even a thing), but the feeling was there. Some melodic piano strokes helped bring it all together.

5. Love You Protect You
Inspired by someone close to me who was going through an unfair and painful time. It hit me deeply, made me want to shield them. Eventually, I realized this would also make a heartfelt wedding song, one where a groom could express his promise in an intimate way

6. Don’t Let Him Get Away
This is the instrumental version of a gospel track from my earlier album It’s Time. The message is urgent: tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so don’t miss the chance to connect spiritually. It’s a call to move, reflect, and awaken.

7. Mach 332
This one follows Summer’s Flight from my Endless Summer Breeze album. It’s a tribute to the 332nd Airborne; the Red Tails. The melody glides like a dream, lifting you over scenic landscapes where time feels like it slows down.

8. Long In Search Of
A love story; the kind where you search everywhere for something, only to find it was right in front of you all along. The rhythm keeps your head nodding while your heart reflects on what’s already within reach.

9. Un Poco Algo
A disco-leaning drum pattern instantly pulled me into a Latin-inspired space. I pictured a dancer whipping her dress in the air like a matador, spinning and stomping to the beat, kind of like a scene from a ballroom dance competition.

10. Percussion Discussion
Jazzy synth pads stirred up a mix of feelings I couldn’t quite name. It has that movie-score feel, shifting and flowing; with an electric guitar outro that ties the whole story together.

11. Piano Pieces
It started with percussion, but quickly moved me into a classical frame of mind, even though I’ve never seen a live opera. I imagined a conductor guiding an orchestra, a pianist in full tails at center stage. I recorded a rough version myself and passed it to a real pianist, who elevated the piece even further.

12. Peaceful Reign
When Prince passed on April 21, 2016, it left a mark. A few days later, this melody came to me. Though the lyrical version isn’t finalized, the music carries the emotion I felt ; with subtle nods to Prince’s iconic sound, especially from Raspberry Beret.

13. Urban Frontiers
Like many others, this track started with a sampled drum pattern. As I adjusted to some new gear, a little melody surfaced and took root. It built layer by layer until it became what you hear now.
